Rakesh Asthana moved out of CBI, sent to aviation security agency

New Delhi, January 19, 2019: Controversial Central Bureau of Investigation officer Rakesh Asthana has been moved out of the agency in a sudden move. Asthana has been transferred to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which largely looks after airport and flight security.

Rakesh Asthana was a special director in the Central Bureau of Investigation, a post seen as No. 2 in the CBI’s hierarchy. He was involved in a bitter public feud with his boss, CBI director Alok Verma, because of which he was sent on forced leave by the government.

Both Rakesh Asthana and Alok Verma had accused each other of corruption. Earlier this month, a select panel, which has the exclusive power to act against CBI directors, removed Alok Verma as CBI chief according to indiatoday.in.

Alok Verma was transferred to the post of director general of fire service, civil defence and home guard. Verma however refused the posting and resigned from the Indian Police Service.

Now, the appointments committee of the cabinet has transferred Rakesh Asthana. Along with Asthana, AK Sharma, MK Sinha and Jayant Naiknaware have also been removed from the CBI.
