Yangon, July 16, 2020: Yangon International Airport (YIA), handled 1.5 million passengers, both domestic and international, in the six months of Jan to Jun 2020, a decrease of 52% compared to the same period last year.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has forced air traffic movements to a low not seen in the last five years since the operation of YIA has transferred to YACL. Except for cargo and relief flights, all commercial international flights have been suspended since 29 March 2020. From Jan to Jun, the aircraft movements declined by 51% to 8857 international landings and take-offs, while the domestic movements decreased by 22% to 13151. The major traffic destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, China, Korea, and Vietnam have declined by an average of 65% at YIA.

The Department of Civil Aviation Authority (DCA) and the National Central Committee for Prevention, Control, and Treatment of COVID-19 have issued notifications for the restriction of international flight (commercial) at all international airports in Myanmar since 29 March 2020. The latest notification extended the restriction to 31 July 20201. However, YACL remains committed to serving YIA during this period with fully functional operations in support of relief and cargo flight that remains vital for the economic sustainability and public health needs of Myanmar during the Pandemic.

During this period of downtime, YACL continues its in-house training through the e-learning platforms for the annual refreshment courses and capacity upgrading of its staff and facilities.
